New approach to type 2 diabetes

A range of small molecules that activate SIRT1 (an enzyme which controls pathways associated with beneficial effects on glucose homeostasis and insulin sensitivity) has been identified (Nature 2007;450:712).

The action of these molecules represents a promising new therapeutic approach for treating diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, the authors say.
