Consultant grade for hospital pharmacists in Scotland next year

Document highlights development opportunities for pharmacists |
A consultant grade is to be introduced for hospital pharmacists in Scotland by December 2008, it was announced this week.
In order to deliver its new action
plan for health, the Scottish
Government published an accompanying workforce
planning document. It
states: “The introduction of a consultant grade for hospital pharmacy
practitioners will assist in modernising the hospital pharmacy service.”
Alison Strath, principal pharmaceutical officer, Scottish Government,
told The Journal: “This will be taken forward over the next one
to three years in line with the action plan on workforce planning. It
is impossible to say at this time how many consultant grade posts there
will be in the future.”
The document also identifies development opportunities for community
pharmacists. “The development of the community pharmacy workforce
to support a wider range of services, supported by the pharmacist’s
assistant, will bring added value to community service provision,” the
document states.
Diagnostic services are given as an example of an area in which pharmacists
might need additional training.
