Planned stoma/appliance fees “inadequate”
Fees proposed by the Government for stoma and incontinence services are inadequate and unrealistic, pharmacy bodies have warned.
The National Pharmacy Association and the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating
Committee argue that the fees proposed by the Government for the provision
of stoma and incontinence appliances and related services fail to offer
any incentive to pharmacy contractors to provide the service.
In their responses to the Department of Health’s latest consultation
on the provision of stoma and incontinence appliances and related services,
the NPA and PSNC also express concern that reimbursement would be subject
to discount deduction for pharmacy contractors but not appliance contractors.
The PSNC criticises plans to cap the number of nurse visits that would
be reimbursed and to restrict primary care trusts to commissioning home
visits from nurses. This may, in future, be a service that pharmacists
with a special interest, or other newly emerging health professionals,
could provide.
