Prospective genotyping to determine which patients are susceptible to abacavir hypersensitivity reactions is supported by data from a randomised trial (New England Journal of Medicine 2007;358:568).

Excluding HLA-B*5701-positive patients from abacavir therapy eliminated immunologically confirmed hypersensitivity reactions (0 per cent of screened patients vs 2.7 per cent in a control group).
