Stress response alcoholism treatment

Mediating stress responses shows promise as a treatment for alcoholism, according to a study published online in Science on 14 February 2008.

Researchers randomised 50 recently detoxified alcoholic inpatients to receive a placebo or LY686017, an agonist of the neurokinin-1 receptor, which mediates behavioural stress responses.

LY686017 suppressed spontaneous alcohol cravings and improved overall well-being.
