Counterfeiters tracked to China

Details of a collaboration between Interpol, scientists from the Wellcome Trust and Oxford University and the World Health Organization that led to the arrest of alleged traders of counterfeit antimalarial drugs in China have been published online (PLoS Medicine 2008;5:e32).

As part of the initiative, researchers studied pollen contamination and mineral content of counterfeit artesunate tablets and concluded that some of the fakes came from south-east China, where the Chinese authorities tracked down the traders.
