Comprehensive introduction to intravenous nutrition

Prescribing adult intravenous nutrition’ by Peter Austin and Mike Stroud. Pp xx+300. Price £29.95. London: Pharmaceutical Press; 2007. ISBN 978 0 85369 658 2

Prescribing adult intravenous nutritionIntravenous nutrition is a highly complex pharmaceutical preparation, invariably administered to extremely unwell patients under the supervision of a multidisciplinary nutrition team.

This textbook, written by two experienced practitioners from Southampton General Hospital’s nutrition team, is both a comprehensive introduction to intravenous nutrition (IVN) and a useful reference text.

Chapters are arranged in a logical progression through the assessment, prescription, administration and monitoring process for parenteral nutrition and, when read in order, provide information and insight into all aspects, both clinical and technical, of parenteral nutrition prescription.

The writing style is easy to read and information is provided at an accessible level for those new to this subject. Examples throughout the text reinforce the clinical application of the information provided.

This textbook provides a comprehensive knowledge base for all clinicians involved in the care of patients on parenteral nutrition. Much of the information supports the recently published National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence guidance on nutrition support, which is unsurprising as Dr Stroud was chairman of this group.

The technical and pharmaceutical knowledge necessary to underpin safe IVN prescribing is also covered, the calculation section being particularly useful for training and those less familiar with this aspect of IVN prescription.

This textbook covers all the areas that prescribers of parenteral nutrition should be aware of. It has relevance to all members of the healthcare team.
