Welsh innovations set to help pharmacy staff

Two pharmacy projects were among the winners at the Welsh Innovations in Healthcare awards last week.

In collaboration with the Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust pharmacy department, a clinical engineer at the trust developed a syringe-loading device, which was the overall winner.

Pharmacy staff had been suffering injuries from the manual effort required when manipulating viscous medicines in large syringes and so a mechanical device was designed to load and pull the syringe, and thereby reduce these injuries. The trust has applied for a patent for the product and is currently in discussions with a commercial developer.

The hybrid innovation runner-up prize was awarded to the pharmacy department of Conwy and Denbighshire NHS Trust. The trust developed software to allow staff to enter all relevant information about patients suffering paracetamol overdoses in order to have the appropriate dose and time course of antidote calculated and printed on a label quickly and efficiently.
