Clues to TB drug resistance

UK scientists have shown how isoniazid binds to activating enzymes within Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Journal of Biological Chemistry 2008;283:6193).

Using protein crystallography and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble they also identified three separate means of drug resistance.

“These observations provide a fundamental platform upon which our understanding of the enzyme-catalysed activation of this prodrug can now be developed for more effective tuberculosis therapies in the future,” the researchers conclude.
