Controlled Drugs
Lessons from a local intelligence network
From Dr C. Cutts, MRPharmS,
and Mr S. Morris, MRPharmS
We were interested to read the article by David Harris and colleagues
on the early lessons from a local
intelligence network (LIN) on managing Controlled Drugs (PJ, 5 April 2008, p404).
In partnership with the National Prescribing Centre, the Centre for Pharmacy
Postgraduate Education (CPPE) has developed a workshop to address key issues
relating to these changes. In total 98 workshops will be held across England
between May and July 2008 to inform and update pharmacy colleagues and ask
them to consider how these changes influence pharmacy practice and local governance
arrangements.
Participants will be challenged about how they currently practise and the decisions
they would make through a series of case studies and activities. The expert
speaker is likely to be the local accountable officer or Royal Pharmaceutical
Society inspector, who will be able to provide a local context to the new arrangements.
There will be time to work with colleagues to solve problems and question the
experts. The workshop will consider:
- Why changes are being made to the regulations for CDs
- The impact on
dispensing, storage and recording of CDs
- Dealing with returns of
CDs
- The role of inspection and monitoring
- The role of accountable officer
- How community pharmacy can support
LINs
- The impact on prescriptions for substance misusers and private
prescriptions
- How to deal with requisitions for CDs
The workshop is applicable to all sectors of pharmacy and open to pharmacists
and pharmacy technicians. For dates and booking details, view the CPPE
website or issue 6 of the CPPE newsletter, news&events.
