Extended services

Leadership is the key to developing services

From Mrs C. A. Adams, MRPharmS

Leadership is a key issue in the development of modern pharmacy services. The pharmacy White Paper “Pharmacy in England: building on strengths — delivering the future”, included examples of what the Royal Pharmaceutical Society is doing in this area of work.

The Society’s “Leading across boundaries” programme is looking at the transfer of care across sector and professional boundaries. The aim is to break down barriers and achieve practical, innovative local results and services through developing leadership skills and effective networks.

For example, in the North West, we are focusing on bringing together health professionals from a wide range of disciplines to tackle weight management. In Trafford we helped local pharmacists to pilot a system of sending a patient discharge summary by electronic fax from the hospital pharmacy to a nominated community pharmacy in order to help improve adherence and reduce risks.

Also, in Shropshire we have worked with a multi-agency group including pharmacists and nurses to improve medicines management within community hospitals.

The Society is pleased that the Government has listened to the profession’s call to extend the clinical and advisory services offered to the public, and will continue its work towards making the process as smooth as possible.

Anne Adams
