BTS and SIGN update asthma guidance

Updated guidelines on the management of asthma have been published by the British Thoracic Society and the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network.

The 2008 guideline contains a completely rewritten section on diagnosis for both adults and children and a section on special situations, which includes occupational asthma, asthma in pregnancy and the new topic of difficult-to-treat asthma.

Updated sections on pharmacological and non-pharmacological management and amalgamated sections on patient education and compliance and on organisation of care and audit, have also been included in the latest edition, which considers literature published up to March 2007.

“British guideline on the management of asthma — a national clinical guideline” was published this week as a supplement to Thorax.
