Advice to patients (16) Frusemide tablets
- Frusemide tablets are often called "water" or "fluid" tablets, or diuretics. They clear excess body water by increasing the amount of urine you produce.
- When you first start to take these tablets you will probably need to go to the toilet more often (mostly in the first two hours after you have taken them). But you will notice this less once you have been taking the tablets for a while.
- It is best to take the tablets in the morning so that you do not need to get up in the night to go to the toilet.
- Like all medicines, this one can have some unwanted effects. Nausea occasionally occurs, but usually goes away if you keep taking the tablets. Tell your doctor if you have headache, muscle cramps or dizziness. Tell you doctor straight away if you have a skin rash.
This series of "advice tips" on commonly used drugs is written by
pharmacists from the Sussex Pharmacy Academic Practice Unit. It is intended
as a reminder of points to be made by pharmacists as they hand out dispensed
medicines. The list is not intended to be comprehensive but to cover some important
points.
