Advice to patients (35) Lansoprazole capsules
- Lansoprazole reduces acid production by the stomach. It is usually used
to treat heartburn (sometimes called acid reflux) or ulcers in the stomach
or intestine.
- The capsules are usually taken once each day, preferably in the morning
before breakfast.
- It is important to swallow the capsules whole with a drink of water.
- Like all medicines, lansoprazole can have some unwanted effects. These include
headaches, diarrhoea, itching and rashes. Tell your doctor if any side effect
is troublesome or persistent.
- Problems can occur if lansoprazole is taken with some other prescribed medicines
or medicines you can buy. Are you taking any other medicines?
This series of "advice tips" on commonly used drugs is written by
pharmacists from the Sussex Pharmacy Academic Practice Unit. It is intended
as a reminder of points to be made by pharmacists as they hand out dispensed
medicines. The list is not intended to be comprehensive but to cover some important
points.
