Indications for Rebif (interferon beta-1a) in multiple sclerosis
Serono, the manufacturer of Rebif (interferon beta-1a) has asked Hospital Pharmacist to point out that the indications for the drug are broader than
those given in our article "Multiple sclerosis the
treatment options" (Hospital Pharmacist, January 2003, p17–21).
Serono says that use of Rebif is not solely restricted
to the treatment of relapsing-remitting MS as the article states, but is indicated for
all MS that has
a relapsing element meeting the
frequency and time criteria. The summary of product
characteristics states: "Rebif is indicated for the treatment of patients with MS and with two or more
relapses within the last two years. Efficacy has not been demonstrated in patients with secondary progressive
MS without ongoing relapse activity."
