New team to study adverse drug events

A medicines risk management team is being formed at Barts and the London NHS Trust.

The team, which will be led by a pharmacist, will focus on reducing adverse drug events. Other members of team will include a nurse and a number of researchers. There will also be part-time support from a doctor.

Michael Cross, director of pharmacy at Barts, says that control of risk will be a huge growth area for pharmacy due to the largely unmet need in this area.

The new team will take a broad look at drug risk and initiate preventive action that may include feeding back into undergraduate and postgraduate training for all staff. The pharmacy department’s ongoing research into medication errors (available for viewing on www.polca.net) is expected to serve as guidance for the team.
