Society moves to regulate pharmacy support staff
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain will
take steps towards the mandatory regulation of pharmacy support staff,
including pharmacy technicians.
This decision was taken by the Council of the Society
at its December meeting. The Council took the view that the Society is
best placed to achieve the main reason for regulation, which is to protect
members of the public. The need to ensure that the development of support
staff would be in line with the Society's plans for the professional development
of pharmacists was also considered.
Responding to the move by the Society, Darren Leech,
chairman of the Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK (APTUK) stated:
"APTUK welcomes and supports the move by the Society to regulate pharmacy
support staff. The association is ready to work with the Society to further
this issue. APTUK has held a voluntary register for many years and has
constantly striven to promote the regulation of pharmacy support staff.
It believes that the regulation of support staff is essential for patient
safety." Mr Leech also said that regulation will enable the setting and
maintenance of national standards.
