Award scheme will allow pharmacists to take time out for research or trainingAn award scheme that will allow UK-based pharmacists in permanent employment to take time out and engage in research or training has been introduced by the charity, PPP Foundation. The charity's mid-career award programme works by funding a locum to cover the pharmacist's absence for a period of six to 24 months. Funding is also available for the activity being undertaken, as well as travel and subsistence costs. PPP Foundation states that the programme is intended to allow health sector staff to devote time to a training or research activity that is beyond their normal professional development opportunities. Applications for training awards are expected to be more imaginative than simply attending taught courses, although such courses can be funded as part of a more extensive project proposal. To qualify for the award, pharmacists must be resident in the UK. They must also have 10–20 years experience since qualification, and at least 10 years left to practise before retirement. Pharmacists must also hold a permanent (full or part time) position in a non-commercial organisation. Obviously the organisation should be willing to allow locum cover during the period of absence from work. The award is administered three times a year and applicants need to initiate the application process at least six months before the start of their proposed activity.
