NEWS IN BRIEF
A new network for pharmacy technicians has been launched.
The UK Mental Health Pharmacy Technician Network has been established
to provide support and education to all pharmacy technicians who specialise
in mental health or have an interest in this area. The aim of the network
is to promote best practice and the sharing of innovative ideas. The new
group is affiliated to the UK Clinical Pharmacy Technician Network and
the UK Psychiatric Pharmacy Group. Pharmacy technicians who are interested
in joining the new network's steering group should contact Elizabeth Ebner
(e-mail lizebner1@hotmail.com).
A fully automated pharmacy dispensing system
is to be installed at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. The system,
supplied by Swisslog Telelift, is designed to record, store and dispense
up to 25,000 items electronically. The system consists of five storage
modules, each capable of storing approximately 5,000 items, an input device
and a retrieval picking unit. The modules are fitted with multiple shelves
and a bar-code scanner is used to record the shelf position of an item
and its expiry date. Items required are keyed into a central control system
and picking heads are then activated that can dispense 1,500 items per
hour.
Torbay Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Unit,
which forms part of the South Devon Healthcare Trust, has transferred
to a newly built distribution centre from its previous trust site location.
The unit will continue to supply licensed products and specials. The unit's
manager, pharmacist Philip Bendell, says that the new centre aims to meet
demands for delivery anywhere in the UK within 48 hours.
