NPSA to recruit trusts for infusion device project

The National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) is looking to recruit a small number of trusts to test and evaluate solutions to prevent infusion device incidents.

The NPSA says that, in June 2002, it commissioned a project to establish the root causes of infusion device incidents and to identify solutions to prevent their recurrence.

The project identified four solutions that are now ready for testing. The NPSA says that these solutions should greatly assist organisations to adopt best practice in areas including purchasing, device usability evaluation, device centralisation and training. The solutions will reduce patient risk and provide a focus for trusts to improve their medical device controls assurance score and identify the potential for significant cost saving, says the NPSA.

Trusts interested in becoming involved in the project should contact the project manager, Chris Quinn, before 14 March at chris.quinn@npsa.nhs.uk
