MHRA start consultation on access to yellow card data

Consultation to consider whether the data collected under the yellow card scheme should be made available to a wider audience has been started by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). There are an increasing number of requests for the adverse drug reaction data from independent researchers in academia and clinical institutions.

The MHRA believes that it is vital that any change in access to the yellow card data should not damage the scheme’s ability to protect public health by discouraging reporters on whose continued support the scheme is entirely dependent.

The subjects upon which comments are invited include the ethical issues of allowing wider access to data, conditions of access and how the additional costs should be covered.

Comments should be sent to the MHRA (room 14-111) by 9 January 2004.
