Independent nurse prescribers across the UK will be able to prescribe an additional 60 prescription-only medicines under proposals published by the Department of Health. This will take the number of prescription only medicines prescribable by independent prescribers to over 200.

Recommendations were received from a joint working group of the Committee on the Safety of Medicines and the Medicines Commission (see panel). A number of products were considered, but rejected, by the joint working group, and these include phenoxymethylpenicillin for tonsillitis and human soluble insulin for hyperglycaemia.

Comments on the proposals should be sent to Martin Bagwell, MHRA, Market Towers, 1 Nine Elms Lane, London SW8 5NQ (email martin.bagwell@mhra.gsi.gov.uk) by 13 July. The proposals can be accessed here

The Department of Health has confirmed that work has begun on preparing for independent pharmacist prescribers. A consultation will take place later in the year, it says.
