expected to take over as the new NHS chief executive this month. He replaces
acting chief executive, Sir Ian Carruthers.
Eight more NHS trusts are set to achieve foundation trust status,
bringing the total to 48, the Department of Health has announced. The

on
1 November 2006, 1 December 2006 and 1 February 2007.
August saw the launch of “Food watch”, a new national
campaign by Patient and
Public Involvement Forums. The forums will
survey patients and their visitors about the quality of the food they
receive during their stay in hospitals across England, as well as about
the cost of drinks and snacks, now often provided by high-street outlets.
The final version of a code of practice on preventing and controlling
health care-associated infections is due to be published by the Department
of Health on 2 October. It is to form part of the Healthcare Commission’s
annual health check from April 2007. A draft
code was published in
July.
A draft specification for electronic prescribing systems has been
developed by NHS Connecting for Health (PDF 470K).
The first national audit of NHS services for people with multiple
sclerosis was published by the Multiple Sclerosis Trust and the Royal
