Plans to create the UK’s largest academic health sciences centre in London were announced recently. The centre will form from collaboration between King’s College London, King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

The new centre will aim to integrate research with teaching and clinical service provision so that patients can receive leading edge treatments at the earliest opportunity.


A campaign to identify four faces of pharmacy has been announced by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. Pharmacists with charisma, enthusiasm, confidence and a broad understanding of health issues are being sought to front the Society’s media campaigns in 2009. The winners of “Rx factor” will receive professional media training.

Only 32 per cent of NHS trusts document a thrombosis risk assessment for patients on admission, according to a recent audit from the All-Party Parliamentary Thrombosis Group. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence issued guidance in April 2007 stating that all hospital patients should be assessed for their risk of developing venous thromboembolism.


Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust has been awarded this year’s First DataBank Europe/Guild of Healthcare Pharmacists/UK Clinical Pharmacy Association information technology award for the development of an electronic learning package for medicines management.
