Medicines Management
Issue no 3, p3
May/June 2002

Comment

Supplementary prescribing by pharmacists could easily be a reality by this time next year.

The publication of the consultation document MLX284 by the Department of Health at the end of April is the beginning of the process which will enable pharmacists in hospitals, the community and those working in primary care organisations to be able to sign their own prescriptions.

Pharmacists who are involved in medicines management services are likely to be the first to benefit. Just think how your life could be transformed if you run medication review services for patients over the age of 75 or a clinic for patients who have suffered a heart attack. The quality of service you offer patients would rise immeasurably if you were able to change their medicine or its dosage without having to refer them to their GP.

If this is the first copy of Medicines Management you have seen and would like to join the mailing list, please send your details to medicinesmanagement@rpsgb.org.uk. Free copies are available for all pharmacists (please include your registration number) and for nurses and doctors with a professional interest in medicines management.
