Medicines Management
Issue no 5, p3
September/October 2002

Comment

If there is a single theme in this issue of Medicines Management it is multi-disciplinary communication.

We carry two articles about schemes in different parts of the country: osteoporosis screening in north-east London, and a repeat dispensing scheme in Wales (p5-7). It is clear that these schemes have been a success because of the enthusiasm and commitment of the individuals driving them forward. Their communication skills in selling their ideas to other interested parties — from a wide range of professional backgrounds — have been critical in establishing and maintaining the momentum of the initiatives.

We also carry two accounts from project facilitators for the National Prescribing Centre first-wave pilot sites, one of whom has been involved in two sites.

These accounts are revealing for almost the same reason as the first two articles. Medicines management is not rocket science, but it does require the enthusiasm of the individuals involved to make sure things happen and to make sure people talk to each other. With the right team on board the sky is the limit.
