HRT does not protect against cardiovascular disease
(17 December 2002)

Further evidence to show that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) does not protect women against cardiovascular disease was published online today (www.thelancet.com).

Researchers randomly assigned 1,000 postmenopausal women aged 50-69 years, who had survived a first heart attack, to receive either 2mg oestradiol valerate or placebo daily. They found no difference in the frequency of recurrent heart attack or cardiac death at follow-up. There was also no difference in all-cause mortality between the two groups.

Dr Nicola Cherry, the principal investigator of the study said: “This study provides insufficient evidence of benefit to alter current guidance against the use of HRT for the secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease.”
