| HRT does
not protect against cardiovascular disease Researchers randomly assigned 1,000 postmenopausal women aged 50-69 years, who had survived a first heart attack, to receive either 2mg oestradiol valerate or placebo daily. They found no difference in the frequency of recurrent heart attack or cardiac death at follow-up. There was also no difference in all-cause mortality between the two groups. Dr Nicola Cherry, the principal investigator of the study said: “This study provides insufficient evidence of benefit to alter current guidance against the use of HRT for the secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease.” |
