March 10 is No Smoking Day. This year’s slogan is “for
smokers who want out”.The official website of the No Smoking Day
charity contains practical tips for giving up smoking as well as resources
for
anyone organising a no-smoking event, including downloadable materials,
guides for working in different settings, the option for e-mail updates

Improving local access to smoking cessation therapies
The PharmacyHealthLink document “Improving local access to smoking
cessation therapies by using patient group directions” explains
the rationale and provides the model template and supporting documents
for the supply of nicotine replacement therapies under PGDs. Copies can

Stop Smoking Update newsletter
A newsletter “Stop Smoking Update” has been launched, designed
to share best practice in smoking cessation with health care professionals
and specialist advisers,
and help them meet Government targets. It is edited by a board of health
care professionals and will be published three times a year. It is sponsored
by an educational grant from Pfizer. Copies can be obtained by e-mailing

Supporting lone parents
A guide designed for health care professionals to help lone parents give
up smoking has been produced by the charity QUIT. The guide, called “Supporting
change”, looks specifically at the issues facing lone parent
smokers and aims to provide health care professionals with realistic
advice about the problems this group of people face. Free copies are

NPA smoking cessation pack
The National Pharmaceutical Association smoking cessation pack focuses
on the “Cycle for change” model to help pharmacists and
their staff deliver smoking cessation support. It is divided into modules
including “nicotine replacement therapy and other products”, “clinical
aspects” and “how smoking harms”. Optional NPA assessment
of activities and a workboook are available. The complete pack, including
NPA assessment and a certificate, is available to NPA members for £42.30.

NHS “giving up smoking” website
The National Health Service “Giving up smoking” website includes
advice on how to give up smoking, campaign news and information and the
option to order free leaflets on all aspects of smoking. See www.givingupsmoking.co.uk
Dental health resources
A range of patient information leaflets, oral health books and mouth
cancer CD Roms are available from the British Dental Health Foundation.
Leaflets entitled “Tell me about smoking and oral health” and “Tell
me about mouth cancer” cost £11 for a pack of 100 for members

NiQuitin CQ support website
“Click2Quit” is a website intended for use in conjunction with NiQuitin
CQ products. It aims to combine pharmacological treatment with individually
