Reclassification of medicines in the United Kingdom

All medicines in the United Kingdom fall into one of three legal classifications which control the circumstances under which they may be supplied and by whom. The three classifications are prescription-only medicine (POM), pharmacy medicine (P) and general sale list medicine (GSL). The classification is specified in each product's marketing authorisation.

April 2002 onwards
All new medicines are POM for their first five years on the market and may only be sold or supplied by authorised practitioners to their own patients or from pharmacies on receipt of a prescription from an authorised practitioner. After five years, manufacturers can apply for medicines to be reclassified for sale and supply from pharmacies (P) or from any shop (GSL) depending on evidence of their safety in use, unless they are intended to treat a specified list of serious diseases.
