(1) Incidence and associated risks
About 20 per cent of the population is now classified
as obese. This is almost three times the figures in 1980 and the upward
trend is set to continue. The report "Tackling obesity" published last
year by the National Audit Office estimated that obesity and its related
conditions would cost the public £3.6bn by 2010. The first article
