Practice research awards 2002

The Council of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society is pleased to announce the 2002 practice research awards. There are two types of award: Galen award — one or more awards made annually to a total value of £10,000 funded by a bequest by Rowland Henry Williams; Sir Hugh Linstead fellowship — one or more awards made annually to a total value of £30,000 funded by a grant from the Leverhulme Trade Charities Trust in order to support research relating to community pharmacy (project proposals are invited with a minimum value of £10,000 and a maximum value of £30,000).

Applications for either award are invited from both new and experienced researchers. Applications are peer-reviewed by an independent panel of researchers (see Society website) on the basis of quality. The panel reviews all applications and scrutinises relevance and feasibility as well as methodological rigour. Any pharmacist whose name currently appears on the Annual Register of Pharmaceutical Chemists is eligible to apply.

Because pharmacy practice is predominantly an applied research area the research agenda should reflect the objectives and meet the needs of the key stakeholders in pharmacy. These include:

  • patients
  • government and public health purchasers
  • pharmacists
  • partners in health and social care provision
  • private sector investors

Although some research will have a direct impact on the way in which pharmacy is practised, other research will generate results that address theoretical and explanatory areas and are useful in developing and underpinning conceptual thinking in the profession (for example, work examining lay beliefs about medicines where the results inform practice, could fall into this category).

The deadline for completed application forms is 28 June and interviews will be held on 14 August at the Society's headquarters in Lambeth.

Further details, application forms and guidance notes are available on the practice research section of the Society's website or by contacting Jackie Moon in the practice research division (tel 020 7572 2278; e-mail jmoon@rpsgb.org.uk).
