Statutory Committee inquiries

The Statutory Committee will meet at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, 1 Lambeth High Street, London SE1, at 9.30am on Monday 21 February, Tuesday 22 February, Wednesday 23 February and Thursday 24 February 2005 to hear the following inquiries:

Monday 21 February
1. An inquiry into a complaint by the Council of the Society against a pharmacist which alleges that the dispensing of excessive doses of diamorphine against prescriptions written by a GP, the failure to maintain appropriate stocks of diamorphine in lower dosages, the failure to exercise sufficient scrutiny of prescriptions for excessive doses of diamorphine, the failure to exercise sufficient control over the product supplied, the failure to exercise the professional judgement and/or the objectivity of a reasonably careful and competent pharmacist, the failure to act towards the GP in a way that was to the benefit and welfare of the public and patients and the failure to discharge obligations as a pharmacist to patients may amount to misconduct.

Tuesday 22 February
2. The committee will continue its inquiry from Monday 21 February referred to in paragraph 1 above.

Wednesday 23 February
3. The committee will resume its inquiry from 25 February 2004 into the case of a pharmacist which alleges that altering the quantity of a medicine prescribed for the pharmacist on two prescriptions, thereby procuring a greater quantity of the medicine than had been authorised by the general practitioner, may amount to misconduct.

Thursday 24 February
4. The committee will resume its inquiry from 21 July 2004 into a complaint by the Council of the Society against a pharmacist which alleges that the application of a system which resulted in overpayment to the pharmacist by the Prescription Pricing Authority (on behalf of the Department of Health) and the supply of chlormethiazole capsules to a patient without the authority of a prescription may amount to misconduct.

5. The committee will resume its inquiry from 26 January 2005 into the case of a pharmacist and a company which alleges that the submission of erroneous claims to the PPA resulting in an overpayment of approximately £52,000 may amount to misconduct.

6. The Committee will resume its inquiry into a complaint by the Council of the Society against a pharmacist which includes allegations that the consumption of alcohol while in charge of the pharmacy and being on duty when unfit to be in charge of the pharmacy, may amount to misconduct.

7. The committee will resume its inquiry into a complaint by the Council of the Society against a pharmacist which includes allegations that the theft of prescription-only medicines from the pharmacy, in respect of which the pharmacist received an adult caution from the police, and the self-administration of prescription-only medicines from pharmacy stock may amount to misconduct.
