FAQ
How do I search?
Enter a few words into a search box and press return (or click the GO button).
Use lower case letters.
I want to search for a phrase
Surround the phrase with double quotes such as "nhs plan"
Can I search for a phrase plus other words?
You can but it is not advisable. You can find dozens or even hundreds of
matches. Instead do a Boolean search, for example nhs
and plan and 2001
Why are there so many results?
Each word you type is examined for variations. For example, tablet
will also find tabulate and tabernacle. You can look for a specific
word by capitalising the first letter: Tablet this will
also find tablets.
You can use initial capital letters with one or more words, including those
in phrases, for example, "nhs Plan"
How do I search for a page number?
To search for an article that begins with a known page number enter, eg,
p576. There is no space between the p and the page number. Narrow
the search by including words, phrases or volume number, such as p576 266
There are still too many results!
Entering a single word will return numerous results. Try entering a phrase
or additional words to narrow the search. Boolean searches
are useful.
Can I search for future events?
There is a notice-board section on PJ Online (see the top of the
home page) with branch meetings, future events and conferences.
Does the search include PDF files?
The search automatically includes every PDF file. For more on PDF files

BOOLEAN SEARCH
What is a Boolean search?
Boolean searching is an alternative way of searching and provides means of
finding specific combinations of individual words.
You can use the following operators between words in a Boolean query: AND,
OR, NOT
NOT is used before each word you wish to specifically exclude. A NOT
can only be used as part of a Boolean query; it cannot be used on its own.
Round brackets can be inserted around parts of the query to control the order
in which the operators are evaluated.
Here are some examples. Note the initial capital letters to ensure those words
only are searched for.
(Homer or Marge) and Simpson
This will return documents containing Homer and Simpson as well as documents containing
Marge and Simpson.
Homer or (Marge and Simpson)
will return documents containing just Homer as well as documents containing Marge
and Simpson.
(Homer Simpson) or (Marge Simpson)
will return documents containing Homer and Simpson as well as documents containing
Marge and Simpson.
(Homer or Marge) and Simpson not Bart
will return documents containing Homer and Simpson as well as documents containing
Marge and Simpson, but it will exclude documents containing Bart.
Note
Boolean syntax does not support phrase searching

PDF FILES
Whatever kind of search you do boolean or otherwise the contents
of PDF files will also be searched. On the search results page, PDF files are
indicated with a logo similar to this![]()
When you click on the PDFs link and open it with Acrobat Reader, the word(s)
you searched for will not be highlighted. Instead you can use Acrobat Readers
own search facility to look for words or phrases in the PDF file.
Ways to search a PDF using Acrobat Reader include
clicking the binocular icon
pressing CTRL-F (PC)
pressing command-F (Apple Mac)
Regular users of PJ Onlines search facilities may notice fewer results
(matched files). Previously individual PDF files would appear more than once if
words/phrases being looked for were on more than one page. This has been changed
so that a PDF will be listed only once.
