PRODUCT ALERT: LifeScan blood glucose meters
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has received
reports that the units of measurement on LifeScan OneTouch Ultra, LifeScan
InDuo and LifeScan PocketScan blood glucose meters can inadvertently
be changed from mmol/L to mg/dl, leading the user to think that the blood
glucose level is too high.
This problem only applies to LifeScan blood glucose meters supplied in
the UK before April 2004 since the units on newer devices cannot be changed.
Pharmacists supplying LifeScan OneTouch Ultra and PocketScan test strips
are asked to advise the user to check the serial number on the back of
the meter. If the serial number starts with any letter from A to R the
user should contact the LifeScan customer care line on 0800 028 8039
for a free replacement. Users should be advised that they can continue
to use affected meters while awaiting replacements but should ensure
that the reading is displayed in mmol/L. For details of how to do this
users should read their operator manual or contact the care
line.
