PRODUCT ALERT: Blood glucose meters

This alert has been updated here

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has received reports that the units of measurement on Medisense Optium Xceed, Therasense FreeStyle Mini and Therasense Free Style blood glucose meters can inadvertently be changed from mmol/L to mg/dl, leading the user to think that the blood glucose level is too high. The change occurs while in the set up mode, which is used to set the time, date or alarms.

Pharmacists aware of patients who are using these meters should advise patients to check that the meter is reading in mmol/L each time it is used.

This follows a similar alert for Lifescan blood glucose meters last month (PJ, 14 May, p579).
