DRUG ALERT: Pentostam injection (15 April 2006)

GlaxoSmithKline is advising health care professionals that all existing and future batches of Pentostam (sodium stibogluconate) injection 100mg/ml should be drawn up through a sterile filter until further notice.

The following sterile membrane filters with a pore size of 5 microns or less are suitable:

• polyvinylidene difluoride membrane
• nylon
• polyethersulfone
• polysulfone

Filtration should take place immediately before use. Bulk filtration procedures should not be carried out.
