RECALL: Plavix (25 May)

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency and the European Medicines Agency are recalling two lots of parallel distributed Plavix 75mg film-coated tablets (clopidogrel, sanofi-aventis/Bristol Myers Squibb) because of the discovery of counterfeit product in the market.

Lot number

The two lot numbers concerned are genuine lots originally supplied in France in French livery. The stock being recalled in the UK has been overlabelled or repackaged by 30 different parallel distributors who may have added prefixes or suffixes to the Eli Lilly lot numbers.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency says that affected product should be quarantined and sent to sanofi-aventis at Chapeltown Distribution Centre, 51 Cart Road, Chapeltown, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S35 2PF for examination. Records should be kept so that reimbursement can be discussed with the original supplier. Pharmacists should contact parallel distributors from whom they have obtained product if batch numbers are not in the formats above, with our without a prefix or suffix.

Returns should be arranged with sanofi-aventis customer services team on 0800 854430 during normal working hours.
