MEDICAL DEVICE ALERT: Counterfeit Durex condoms (29 October 2007)

Counterfeit Durex condoms bearing the following lot numbers have been found on the UK market. Some of these have not been previously available as genuine products.

There is no assurance that counterfeit condoms have been manufactured to appropriate standards and users cannot be guaranteed adequate protection.

SSL International believes that all previously available genuine Durex products bearing the above lot numbers will by now have been sold as they were distributed before November 2006.

Suppliers and retailers should identify affected products, not supply affected products, and contact the Durex consumer care line on 0800 338 739 to discuss disposal or replacement.

Health care professionals should advise people who may have been supplied with counterfeit condoms to contact the Durex Consumer Careline, consider counselling particular groups such as those with HIV infection and report any adverse incidents involving counterfeit condoms to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency on 020 7084 3080 (e-mail aic@mhra.gsi.gov.uk) and the manufacturer.

Pharmacists should ask users to inform their local trading standards office if they believe that they have purchased counterfeit condoms and to report any adverse incidents.
