The first symposium about khat held in the UK was attended by phytochemists, pharmacognosists, pharmacologists, mental health workers and members of organisations concerned with drug abuse. The symposium on khat was organised by Peter Houghton, professor of pharmacognosy, King’s College, London, and took place at the college on 20 January 2004
