A part-time distance learning course with short residential periods. The 18-month diploma course comprises eight modules. Each module is divided into three 50-hour sections. There are six compulsory modules: cardiovascular and respiratory therapeutics; central nervous system therapeutics; gastrointestinal, endocrine and musculoskeletal therapeutics; body defence therapeutics and interpretation of laboratory data; pharmaceutical care planning; and medicines resource management (pharmacoeconomics, evidence-based medicine, guidelines and protocols, audit and clinical governance). Two optional modules are chosen from three: specialised pharmaceutical care needs (mental health, learning disabilities, drug misuse and palliative care); specialised pharmaceutical care provision (elderly and paediatrics, renal/hepatic impairment, intensive therapy); and aseptic dispensing. Students who undertake only the first four of the six compulsory modules (nine months) can be awarded a certificate in therapeutics. The MSc is awarded after completion of a module on health services research methods and a research project. |
