The courses are task-orientated, with an emphasis on an evidence-based and problem-solving approach to current practice. Students undertake a common programme at the postgraduate certificate level (minimum one year). The course is divided into modules delivered entirely by distance-learning, including self-assessment exercises. Assessment is based on the answers to a series of case-based questions returned to the university for marking. On successful completion of the certificate year, students may progress to the diploma (minimum two years). The diploma requires an additional stage of a notional 600 hours of guided study with a four-day residential module, in separate streams for the hospital and community pharmacy qualifications. The MSc programme, common to both courses, involves a further 600 hours study including a research methods module and a practice-based research project.
