The certificate course is a one-year part-time course, the diploma can be gained over one to two years’ part-time and the MSc by two to three years’ part-time or one year’s full-time study. The certificate course entails study of various aspects of therapeutics, including cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, psychiatric and respiratory problems. Diploma students also study medicines management, including evidence-based medicine, pharmacoeconomics, formularies, adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, concordance and prescribing in special circumstances, such as pregnancy. Candidates undertake a clinical clerkship at their hospital, community pharmacy or primary care workplaces. The MSc course comprises the diploma plus a research project, which can be undertaken concurrently or consecutively. All courses entail Wednesday study days at Sunderland University, plus workbooks and workplace tasks. Clerkship modules require extensive patient contact in hospital, community pharmacy or GP practice. |
