The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry Tel 020 7930 3477 This is the trade association representing companies that research, develop and manufacture prescription medicines. The ABPI publishes the 'Compendium of data sheets and summaries of product characteristics'. It also produces a compendium of patient information leaflets. Both are updated in hard copy on an annual basis, but are available electronically on the electronic medicines compendium (eMC) website (www.emc.vhn.net), which is updated daily. British Pharmaceutical Students' Association Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education Tel 0161 778 4000 The CPPE aims to provide the continuing education you need to be a lifelong learner. Sources of education include distance learning programmes, of which there are more than 50, and also workshops, which are run in over 100 locations in England every year. Early on in your preregistration year, trainees in England receive four of the CPPE's distance learning packs responding to symptoms, patient medication records, child health and adverse drug reactions. At the end of the year, the information pack you receive from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society will provide you with information on further learning programmes. The College of Pharmacy Practice Tel 024 7622 1359 The aim of the College of Pharmacy Practice is to promote continuing professional development (CPD) for all pharmacists. It does this by running study days and seminars and encouraging practice research and interprofessional activities. The college also provides a CPD portfolio, available only to college members, which enables pharmacists to identify their CPD needs and document what they have done about them. Members have to undertake a minimum of 30 hours of accredited continuing education each year. Associate membership of the college is open to any pharmacist and full membership can be achieved by two routes by practice making use of evidence documented in the CPD portfolio or by examination. Company Chemists' Association Tel 0115 959 3432 The Company Chemists' Association (CCA) represents large multiples in community pharmacy, including Boots The Chemists, LloydsPharmacy, Moss Pharmacy, Safeway, Superdrug, Tesco and Sainsbury's and it involves 3,000 pharmacies. The CCA is consulted on pharmaceutical issues by the Government and professional bodies and is represented on the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee (PSNC), the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Community Pharmacy Group and is a partner in the Community Practice Consortium Group. Federation Internationale Pharmaceutique (FIP) Tel +31 70 302 1970 The Federation Internationale Pharmaceutique (FIP) is a worldwide pharmacy organisation whose main aim is to encourage professional networking between pharmacists from all over the world. This is achieved mainly through the annual congress, which attracts over 3,000 participants. FIP also develops strategic policies in relation to pharmacy practice and science at an international level. It supports projects and working groups that investigate innovative pharmacy practice and produce data to encourage pharmacy practice globally. Guild of Healthcare Pharmacists Tel 020 7939 7000 The Guild of Healthcare Pharmacists represents hospital and health body pharmacists and preregistration trainees in the public sector and those in similar employment in the private sector. It negotiates pay and conditions for NHS hospital pharmacists. Members participate through local groups, which hold professional, business and social meetings throughout the year. Meetings are also organised at a national level, including an annual weekend school. The guild makes a number of awards available to support practice research activity and contribute to personal and service development. Institute of Pharmacy Management International Tel 01277 823889 The Institute of Pharmacy Management International (IPMI) is concerned with effective business administration and management of pharmaceutical services. Pharmacists from any branch of the profession can be members. Benefits of membership include conferences and seminars on a range of management topics, which are accredited for continuing education. In collaboration with the National Pharmaceutical Association, the IPMI also produces a modular management course. Students can be student members and associate membership is open to those who work in a pharmaceutically related occupations, including preregistration trainees. Ordinary member is available to pharmacists , with fellowship achievable by portfolio. National Association of Women Pharmacists Website: www.nawp.org.uk The National Association of Women Pharmacists (NAWP) aims to promote the careers of women in pharmacy and of women pharmacists in public life, by encouraging new fields of practice, promoting job sharing and flexible hours and acting as a voice for women pharmacists. Membership benefits include an annual conference, study days and a regular newsletter, supplemented by fact sheets on specific topics of interest. In addition, it provides the opportunity for pharmacists to meet and share similar experiences of managing time to meet family and professional commitments. The National Pharmaceutical Association Tel 01727 832161 The National Pharmaceutical Association (NPA) is the trade association and parent body of a group of organisations serving pharmacy proprietors. Membership comprises 96 per cent of all community pharmacies in the UK (excluding only those of Boots and the Co-operative Societies). The NPA was formed in 1921 to champion the interests of pharmacy proprietors and to serve as an organisation for the promotion, improvement, and protection of its members. Soon after its foundation, it joined forces with the Chemists Defence Association, thus conferring on NPA members indemnity insurance against claims for which they are liable, entitlement to legal defence against certain prosecutions and legal representation before industrial and other tribunals. In addition, the NPA helps with legal advice, information, business services (supplying everything needed to run a pharmacy business), training for pharmacists, dispensing technicians and pharmacy assistants, a range of publications, financial help and advice, and pharmacy planning. National Prescribing Centre Tel 0151 794 8134 The National Prescribing Centre (NPC) is a National Health Service organisation, funded by the Department of Health. Approximately 25 per cent of its work comes under the umbrella of the National Institute for Clinical Excellence. The NPC facilitates and promotes high quality, cost effective prescribing and medicines management. It provides training for prescribing advisers and information on medicines. The NPC also looks for new drugs with the potential for significant impact on the NHS, and it informs national research and development around prescribing and medicines management. It supports information technology developments for prescribing and promotes best practice. Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee Tel 01296 432823 The Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee (PSNC) represents the interests of National Health Service pharmacy contractors and negotiates their fees and other payments with the Department of Health. The PSNC also operates the National Prescription Research Centre (NPRC), which checks the Government's pricing of 1 per cent of all NHS prescriptions. Proprietary Association of Great Britain (PAGB) Tel 020 7242 8331 The Proprietary Association of Great Britain represents the manufacturers of medicines intended for use without a prescription, and is involved in all matters which affect the marketing and use of non-prescription medicines. It administers codes of standards, which require all labels, leaflets, and advertising be accepted by the association before publishing. Other activities include publication of the OTC Directory, which lists all its members' products, their indications, pack sizes and prices. Updated annually, the directory is sent to all pharmacists and preregistration trainees. It is also available on line at www.medicinechestonline.co.uk. The PAGB has established the Consumer Health Information Centre (CHIC), an education service for the public to help them improve their understanding of common ailments and their treatment. There is also the Health Supplements Information Centre (HSIS), which is intended to be a balanced source of information on supplements for journalists, health professionals and the public. Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain Tel 020 7735 7141 The Royal Pharmaceutical Society is the registration and professional body for pharmacists in Great Britain, and is responsible for regulating and promoting the profession. Local branches serve the interests of members in a number of ways, including the provision of meetings of an educational nature. The Society has a library and information centre,a professional standards directorate which advises on legal and ethical matters and a public affairs directorate to promote pharmacy. The practice division develops policies on pharmacy practice and the education division deals with continuing professional development, training and undergraduate education. The audit department supports pharmacists wishing to audit their practice. The Society's Pharmaceutical Press produces a range of publications, including Martindale and the British National Formulary and a number of other textbooks for pharmacists. Journals include The Pharmaceutical Journal, Hospital Pharmacist, Medicines Management, The International Journal of Pharmacy Practice and the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology. There is also a range of special interest groups which hold regular meetings throughout the year. Details of the groups are available on the Society's website. Scottish Centre for Post Qualification Pharmaceutical Education Tel 0141 548 4273 SCPPE provides education and training for hospital and community pharmacists working within the NHS in Scotland. United Kingdom Clinical Pharmaceutical Association Tel 0116 277 6999 The main objectives of the United Kingdom Clinical Pharmacy Association are to improve patient care by encouraging the rational and effective use of medicines and the adoption of an interdisciplinary approach to drug therapy. It also aims to stimulate the development of clinical pharmacy in the UK and to develop ways of evaluating the pharmacist's contribution to care. Student membership is open to all pharmacy students and preregistration graduates. Welsh Centre for Post-Graduate Pharmaceutical Education Tel 029 2087 4784 WCPPE provides continuing education and training in the form of workshops and distance learning materials for all pharmacists and their support staff in Wales. It also places emphasis on supporting continuing professional development (CPD). Young Pharmacists' Group (YPG) Tel 0121 681 8099 The aim of the Young Pharmacists' Group is to ensure that young pharmacists play a full part in serving their profession. This involves getting pharmacists (of any age) to present forward thinking ideas on the profession and to challenge anything wrong with the system. It acts as a bridge from the British Pharmaceutical Students' Association to the wider world of the pharmacy profession and is proactive rather than reactive in its stance. |
